You only do the sc 1, dc 1, sc 1 in a single stitch; the sc 2 that precede it you do each in their own stitch. This helps make the corners of the rectangle. And then when you get to the front loop crochet bit, that'll turn it from a rectangle into a box; it should stay relatively box-shaped on its own, though you do need to be careful about lining up the corners again when you close it.
