My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Basic pony pattern

Hello to all :) And a special, slightly belated hello to all the Bronies (and pals?) over from Equestria Daily ♥

Surprise pattern time! I in no way expected this to be the next pattern I posted, and then I ended up crocheting it on a whim, so. It's definitely more on the "difficult" side as my patterns go, I'm afraid :P Still, I'm hoping to have a much simpler pattern up next - or at least relatively soon.

A note on the pattern as a whole: This pattern is based on the basic ponies we see so much of in the show, particularly the mane cast and the background ponies. Ponies with different body types - Celestia, Luna, Big Macintosh, Granny Smith, younger ponies, and anyone I might be forgetting - would ideally have a different shape. Unfortunately, I'm not likely to get around to making the patterns for them any time soon, short of getting a commission for them (or a really huge donation or something); this pattern will still work for any of them, it just won't look -quite- right. [Edit:] uminohoshi suggests half-double crochet (double crochet for the UK folks) for young ponies. [/edit]

Another lifehack from the comments: "The trick to stuffing a dark piece with pale fiberfill is to find a darkish sock (or the foot off a pair of pantyhose) and put that inside the piece, then stuff the sock." Way cool.

As always, feel free to alter something with the pattern if, while you are making it, you think it would look better. It's more important that you're happy with the end product than you stick exactly to the pattern.

The white pony pictured above is actually going to be Rarity when finished; I gave her a temporary nose job so I could get some reference images in this post. Being the embodiment of generosity, I'm sure she won't mind - especially if I get it off her quick ;)

I was originally planning to make a Dr. Whoof to showcase the alternate nose, but these ponies take a long time to crochet, and I've got a charity project to finish ^^a I used up all of my vacation time on Fluttershy and soon-to-be-Rarity, and now it's time to get down to business. After I'm done with that, though, back to fun :Dbb

I am also pleased to announce that knitoneawesome has made a single crochet version (double crochet for the UK folks) and it looks fantastic! Everyone who has ever wanted a SC version is invited to take a look - and even those who like the DC version fine, because who knows if you won't like that one better?

For this pattern you need to know: How to crochet in the round [spiral], chain stitch (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), how to increase ([stitch] 2 in 1), how to decrease ([stitch] 2 tog), front loop crochet (fl [stitch]), back loop crochet (bl [stitch]), US stitch names. You can find a bunch of crochet tutorials here.

A note on wings: I tried like the dickens to come up with a single-piece unfolded wing pattern, but nothing I came up with looked Rainbow Dash enough - and considering that some of you might well be crocheting Rainbow Dash, that was at least 20% too uncool. So I decided to go with a compromise, and offer a pattern both for folded wings and for more "Rainbow Dash" unfolded wings. The folded wings still look fine, and are a bit simpler if you've already gotten a terrible headache from the rest of the pattern. (Or at least from the hindlegs. If the front loop decreasing/back loop increasing in the middle of those is giving you a headache, they should still work fine with regular double crochet decreasing/increasing; they'll just lose a touch of "sharpness", which you'll really want to keep with the hooves if nowhere else.) Make whichever ones you feel most comfortable with - or heck, make one of each! That'd probably be great for Derpy ;)

For those who want a sc pattern instead of a dc pattern: I don't know if I'll ever have the patience needed to work everything out exactly, BUT I do have a conversion rate: For every 3 rows of dc, I crochet 5 rows of sc. Increasing at 6 stitches per round usually ends up with about the same dimensions, so it's mostly the straight-up "dc 1 in 1 all around" rounds you need to convert. To find out how many rounds of sc to use instead of dc, divide the dc number by 3, and then multiply the result by 5. For example, in the body there are 9 rounds with no stitch number changes; 9/3 = 3, 3x5 = 15, so you need to do 15 rounds of sc.

For the parts that increase or decrease at a lower rate than 6 stitches per round (ears, legs), maybe try alternating each row that changes number with a row that doesn't change number? I don't know if it will work, but it may be worth a shot.

Sizing Info: I used a 5mm/H hook for a gauge of ~4.5 dc per inch/5 dc per 3cm, 6 rounds per 2 inches/5cm. I'd estimate 250 yards required; I usually pick up a skein of Red Heart or I Love This and end up with plenty of extra.

Assembly:

I usually start with the head and designate the first ring as the "front". I sew the nose on over that spot, with the first rows lining up to the best of my ability. I usually stuff the nose when it's about two-thirds sewn on.

For the ear placement, imagine a line that goes from the front middle of the nose to the middle of the back of the head. The bottom of the ear should roughly match up with this. DO NOT STUFF THE EARS. Make sure they're curved slightly towards the top of the head as you sew them on. The ears should be about an inch and a half/four centimeters apart at their closest point.

I usually sew the neck to the head before the body, but you can do it either way. Make sure the narrowest part lines up with what will be the front of the body/head, and the widest part faces with what will be the back of the body/head. I like to attach the neck a couple rounds "behind" the nose and maybe one above the first round of the body, and then as evenly/round as I can from there. I don't stuff the neck until it's at least half-way sewn down to the second body part.

All four legs I stuff almost to the top. Imagine a line that divides the pony's belly in half lengthwise; you can use a contrasting color of yarn as a visual aid, which I usually do. With the "line" of decreases facing the front, position the front legs on either side of this line directly below the neck. Sew them in place, folding a bit of the cloth in on the inside of each leg to allow the legs to curve slightly around the body. Do the same thing with the rear legs at the back end of the pony.

If you're attaching a horn, sew it an even distance between the ears and about two rounds in front of them.

If you're attaching wings, sew them on to the body slightly below the neck about where the sc turn into dc and vice-versa; make sure the feather ends point to the back.


Fluttershy's cutie mark and eyes I made by painting them onto felt, cutting them out, and then hot-gluing them on. For her mane, I used the fringe method, though I substituted a clipboard (longwise) for the lace loom. For her tail, I simply cut a bunch of yarn that looked to be about twice the length of her tail, tied it in the middle, and secured that as firmly as I dared to her hindquarters. For Rarity, I'll probably be using a variation the Owly method, which I haven't actually tried before. I'll probably be crocheting the bases for her hair in rows, attach one end of each to the appropriate places, and adding the top layer of yarn to both sides either before or after the attachment. We'll see how it goes, I guess; when I get around to it, I hope to update this post with pictures of the finished product :)b

Selling Ponies?

A friend of mine is selling crocheted objects like scarves and blankets and stuffed animals.

I found this pattern and showed it to her, and suggested selling to our local group of bronies. But then I realized I should really ask your permission first, since you did all the work of making the pattern and it's yours. :)

What's your policy on other people selling ponies based on this pattern?

Is this made wrong-side out? (Right-side being the side that faces you when crocheting.) Because I think some of your back-loop-only/FLO rows seem backwards for a right-side out dc spiral. Row four of the legs, for example... I would usually do BLO and have a little ring of skipped front loops there, and you... it looks like you have that in the pictures? So then it must be wrong-side?

You could well be right! I'm a mostly feral crocheter, so I might have my terms mixed up. It was my impression that FLO crochet uses the loop that's farther away from you, while BLO crochet uses the one that's closer to you? Did I get that wrong? If so, I'll go through and change it.

Round 13 of the head appears to have an errata. Shouldn't it be dc2tog, dc1? (Instead of dc2tog, dc2). If you do it as written - you end the round on a dc2tog and have 13 stitches instead of 12.

PS: thank you for the pattern! This is my first real crochet attempt - I'm usually a knitter - and i'm enjoying the hell outta it.

love the patterns and thank you for them. just out of curiosity, do you crochet tight? i was stuffing a head, and saw my fiberfill in between my dc's. I tried it again, making my stitches tighter, but with the same results. boo.

Sorry for the late reply! Yeah, I crochet way tight. If you're using a darker colored yarn, you might consider picking up some extra bad/cheap, possibly even secondhand yarn to stuff your things with instead. There have also been people who have modified the pattern for sc instead of dc, but I haven't gotten a link to any of them yet.

I'm not the creator of this pattern, but I'm going to answer this one because I didn't see an answer to it. What you're doing is decreasing (double crocheting two stitches together) at the beginning of every round, then double crocheting in each stitch after that decrease for the rest of the round. This is going to gradually make the leg smaller as it goes up toward where it'll connect to the body. So the directions in the () are telling you how to decrease from 24 stitches (which you had in round 5) to the 23 stitches that you need in round 6.
You are not going to *decrease, double crochet in next stitch* and repeat * to * 22 times; You will decrease then double crochet in the next 22 stitches.

It starts with 'sc 6'. Is this meant to be 6 chain or a magic circle with 6 sc?

Does it come out as a flat piece and then you sew it together or do you sew it into it's shape? (Mine turned out more like a tiny bowl than anything like a horn, this way).

DC second round after the magic circle

Okay, I've made quite a few amigurumi and plush animals, but my experience is only with single crochet dominant patterns, so the double crochet is throwing me for a loop (no pun intended). I know how to make a Magic circle (or magic ring) with the double crochets in it, but what has me puzzled is the round after that magic circle. Do you connect your last double crochet to the first double crochet with a slip stitch and then chain three for the next round? Your pattern doesn't explain if that's the method you used, and I'm having trouble figuring this out. Thanks for this pattern! It's the best pony pattern I've found.

You double crochet right into the first dc of the first round; don't join the rounds and make a new one, just keep going in a spiral. (I also use a single crochet in the first stitch of the magic ring and then follow it up with eleven double crochet whenever I don't start with 6 sc; this allows for a more natural spiral to form, I've found.)

I'm very frustrated with the ears!! How do u do it... ive tried your pattern but it did not work. It made a nose shape so I tried filing it in half. Looked horrible. Then I tried usind just rows, not amigirumi. Horrible. What do I do!?

Thanks a lot for that pattern, I really would love to try it- but I am a beginner and a native german speaker- so your pattern is very hard to understand. Is anyone reading that who can help me? Specially hard is that the stitches are named another way. I found a translation paper at http://www.wolleunddesign.de/Download/WolleUndDesignEnglischeStrickbegriffe2009.pdf but still lack the experience to translate your pattern :(

What is meant by
Round 13: dc 2 tog, dc 5, bl dc 2 tog x 3, dc 6 (dc 15)
Round 14: dc 6, fl dc 2 in 1 x 3, dc 6 (dc 18)

Can not find a translation for "sc", "fl dc" "bl dc" "fl sc" "sl st". Maybe someone can write that shortcut out as a whole word for me?
If I got it right, dc means feste Masche in german...

Tavros pony help?

Hi there! I absolutely love this pattern and I'm making my boyfriend a Tavros pony for his birthday. I have every part down except for his horns. Do you have any advice as to how to go about making his horns? I cannot make my own patterns to save my life and a little help would be greatly appreciated. C:

I can't say that I did, though I could probably math it out if needed. What sort of problems are they having? Could you describe it? Or could they? I do have anonymous commenting turned on, so that part wouldn't be a problem.

I was wondering about the head? Or where you have sc 6 crossed out!? Do we have to change the rest of the number of st now that we are starting with 12?
Ex: Magic cirlce do 12 DC/ 2 DC in each st around (24) ??

So sorry for the late reply! I was switching ADHD meds, and the new stuff just kicked in recently. (Also sorry for the reading comprehension error earlier, if you saw that; argh.)

Okay, I should have cleared things up now. I've officially removed all of the "sc 6" round where they shouldn't be, re-numbered all subsequent rounds, and deleted where it says to increase every stitch in what would now be the first round. I hope that clears everything up, but if it doesn't, I'm willing to give it another go.

Ring in dc?

I'm a noob at crocheting, and I've only worked on scarfs. how do you start the ring in dc? Do you start a normal chain of sc and then loop them into a ring and start dc?

That is one method, yes! I usually use a magic/adjustable ring (tutorial), but many people chain a small loop (seal it with a slip stitch) or just chain three and put all their first round stitches in the first chain. When starting a ring in dc, I also like to make the first stitch sc, to make the spiral more natural and to better ease into dc, but that's a personal style thing.

Another season of My Little Pony recently ended, and a friend of mine is begging me to make a character from the last episode: Queen Chrysalis. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for how to create gaping holes in her legs and wings. Thanks! I really appreciate your patterns!

Sweet stars and sunshine, that is a task and a half! I'll describe the process I use to make holes in things, but I don't think I'll be up to writing/figuring out the actual pattern; that'll have to be on you.

Here's the process I would use for her legs:

Row 1a: Dc 2 tog to form the bottom edge of one hole; switch to rows and crochet until you reach either the other side of this hole (to form notches) or where you want the other hole to be (to form a hole that goes all the way through)

Row 2a: Dc 2 tog again, and reverse the row to crochet to the top stitch of the opposite side

Row 3: Reverse the row and dc to the opposite side and dc 2 in 1

IF YOU ARE MAKING NOTCHES: Chain the number of dc between the dc 2 tog in Row 1a and the dc 2 tog in Row 2a; dc 2 in 1 in the top end stitch of 3a, where you reversed the row for the final time. Crochet a separate piece of cloth at least 4 rows high and the length of the notch; sew it in place.

IF YOU ARE MAKING HOLES:

Turn the first row 4 stitches from the middle of the leg; Continue to finish Row 2a. CUT the yarn.

Two stitches from the Dc 2 tog in Row 2a, re-start; this will be Row 1a.

Row 1b: Dc 2 tog, dc (1/2 of leg round minus 8), dc 2 tog;
Row 2b: Dc across the top of the row
Row 3: Reverse the row, dc 2 in 1, ch 2, dc 2 in 1 in the end stitch of Row 2a; continue to dc until you reach the final stitch, where you will again dc 2 in 1, ch 2, and dc 2 in 1 in the end stitch of 2b.
Row 4: Continue to crochet normally, using the chain stitches as replacements for what would normally be dc.

When you are finished with the leg, chain however many it takes to form a ring that matches the hole for size; dc around the ring until it's long enough to go through the hole in one side of the leg and meet at the other; sew them in place.

Alternately, chain however long it takes to go from the hole on one side to the hole on the other; dc rows until what you have will go all the way around the circumferance of the hole. Sew the top and bottom of this strip together to form a tube. Sew either end of the tube to the appropriate hole on either side.

For the wings:

You're probably going to want to make straight-up cloth in rows for the wings. It's basically the same process as for the holes and notches in the legs, except entirely in rows and with more increases in the body of the wings.

Assume these start or finish wherever you've decided to put the holes or notches.

HOLES:
Row 1a: Dc 2 tog
Row 2a: Dc 1*
CUT the yarn off; count 2* dc from the dc 2 tog in 1a and start here.
Row 1b: Dc 2 tog
Row 2b: Dc 1*
Row 3: Dc 2 in 1, ch 2*, dc 2 in 1, continue in the rows

NOTCHES:

Row 1: Dc 2 tog however many from the end (min: 1*)
Row 2: Dc [length of reduced row]*
Row 3: Dc until you get to final stitch of row, dc 2 in 1
Row 4: Dc [full length of row]

* These are the measurements for what I would use as the minimum size of hole. You can make them larger or smaller by adding more rows between the first and final and more stitches between parts A and B/dc 2 tog and the end of the wing. HOWEVER: You need to increase to another odd number of rows in order for everything to come out even/smooth.


And that's all I've got. If you have trouble with any of that, ask me and I'll do my best to explain better.

Just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful pattern because I was able to do a fluttershy and a twilight to give the voice actresses. Here is a link to those pictures. Fluttershy was being rather shy and she was behind my head. Lol.

Their cutie marks look great :) I think Twilight's turned out especially well, but the 3D aspect of Fluttershy's is pretty neat, too.

I honestly have no idea. Well, two more rows for the horns, but other than that I have no plans to make or puzzle out the pattern for any of the non-basic pony shapes at this point in time, especially since I'm doing everything here unpaid. Sorry!
