Hello, all! I've returned triumphantly(?) from AnimeIowa 2012 :) I'm still not quite up to answering comments - spoons have been diverted elsewhere - but I can post a couple of simple patterns for the lovely MSPA fans I met there.

Like Problem Sleuth, PI's hat comes off.

For this pattern you need to know: How to crochet in the round, how to crochet in rows, chain stitch (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), triple crochet (tc), how to increase ([stitch] 2 in 1); US stitch names.

Head (make 2)
Round 1: Begin in a ring; dc 12; continue in a spiral
Round 2: dc 24 (dc 2 in 1 all around)
Round 3: dc 36 (dc 2 in 1, dc 1 all around)
Round 4: dc 48 (dc 2 in 1, dc 2 all around)

Body (make 2)
Row 1: Ch 12
Row 2: dc 10
Row 3: dc 4, dc 2 in 1, dc 5 (dc 11)
Row 4 thru 6: dc 11
Row 7: Dc 5, dc 2 in 1, dc 5 (dc 12)
Row 8 thru 10: Dc 12
Row 11: Dc 5, dc 2 in 1, dc 6 (dc 13)
Row 12 thru 14: Dc 13
Row 15: Dc 6, dc 2 in 1, dc 6 (dc 14)
Row 16 thru 18: Dc 14
Row 19: Dc 6, dc 2 in 1, dc 7 (dc 15)
Row 20 thru 22: Dc 15

Hat (make 2)
Row 1: Ch 9
Row 2: Sc 1, dc 6, sc 1
Row 3: Dc 2 in 1, dc 6, dc 2 in 1 (dc 10)
Row 4: Ch 3, sl st 3, dc 10, ch 4 (ch and sl st will form brim)
Row 5: Dc 14
Row 6: Sl st 1, sc 1, dc 10, sc 1, sl st 1

Shoes (make 4)
Row 1: ch 10
Row 2: dc 8
Row 3: dc 2 in 1, dc 4, dc 2 in 1

Arms (make 2)
Row 1: ch 35
Row 2: sl st 8
Row 3: ch 9
Row 4: sl st 8
Row 5: ch 9
Row 6: sl st 34

Legs (make 2)
Row 1: ch 16
Row 2: sl st 15

Body: sc through both pieces over the long sides and bottom; sc the top closed is optional; stuff lightly
Head: sc 12 through one, sc through both until you reach the beginning of the sc through one, sc 12 through other piece; stuff lightly. Pull over the top of the body and sew closed on top of it.
Shoes: sc or just sew all the way around
Hat: sc or just sew over the sides and top of both pieces together; sc or just sew around the brim, separately
Legs: As on option, you can sc through the top of either his shoes or the corners of his lower body to skip a little bit of tying
When sewing large pieces together (feet, hats), I quadruple up the yarn; this gives it a nice bold outline without having to make excessive stitches.

Mobile mouth, eyebrows
For the eyebrows, mouth, etc, I bought some thin black wire and quarter-inch/half-centimeter beads. Thread two beads on the wire, wrap the end around one wire, extended it to what you think is the right length for the feature you're making, wrap the wire around the other bead and cut the wire off. Experiment a little to get the effects you want.
The beads should fit through gaps in the crochet with ease, and you can manipulate the wire as you see fit.

For standard, stay-where-they-are features, I recommend just yarn or pipe cleaners. I suggest you use those anyway when adding his coat lines.
